I promised to talk about desire, but first a few more words about the ‘meaning of life’. I know, it’s become a joke, and I understand why. The evidence would suggest that nothing we do in this lifetime has any lasting impact. Any halfway intelligent person realizes that the world will go on quite nicely without us. You only have to close your eyes and tune into the impersonal buzz of existence to realize that the present moment is vast beyond your power to influence the unfolding of the next moment.
Because it’s already here!
Therefore, we should forget about finding meaning or salvation in the actual events of our lives. Meaning is elusive because it’s not something we do or think about. It’s a direct experience of the way things really are.
The human organizm—each of us—is evolving toward clarity about the way things actually are. Our conscious involvement in that process is quite simply the meaning of life. To get more involved we can join a mystical sect and wear flowing robes and spin in circles. Or, alternatively, we can just keep our eyes open.
Writing this blog, it’s my way to keep alert. I would imagine that reading it and joining in the conversation might be useful as well. I sure hope so.
